Transferring anf Prereqs: Should I bother taking them over?

Thursday, July 29th, 2010 @ 12:40 am

Hey so I had a question. I transferred home after being at a school and having a major I didn’t enjoy for 3 years. It was biotech but I changed to anthropology (medical anthro is my concentration). My prereqs aren’t great. There are a lot of Cs in there and I’m taking Orgo over again because I got a D (and it won’t transfer). Should I take over the classes with lower grades or just take higher science classes? The thing is cus my major used to be a bio, I already had some higher science classes in there but I didn’t do great in those either. I was hoping that if I show my improvement in a new school and that I could be a more reliable student (and hopefully do amazing on the MCATs), they won’t penalize me so much for messing up. Advice anyone?

Answer:When you apply through AMCAS, they are going to want transcripts from all post-secondary institutions you have attended. I would at the very least retake any science/pre-med courses you did not do well in, even a 0.1 increase in your sGPA could mean a lot to a school looking at your app. As far as your non-science courses, I would guess that if they saw you took the time to change majors, and saw a steady increase in your cumulative GPA (i.e. 3.2 freshman, 3.4 soph, 3.6 junior, 3.7 senior), it would work in your favor.

Answer:Retakes will help you more if you’re applying DO - that application only takes the higher grade.

Either way though, if your grades are bad, you need to (re)take more science. With a low GPA and a crummy foundation you’re not going to be able to apply successfully.

Answer:If you’re planning on applying to DO schools it might make sense to retake them. If not both grades will be counted, so it probably makes sense just to take something else and be sure that you do well.
